AFTON – Big Piney senior Colby Jenks broke into the top 10 at the 4A West Cross-country Regional Meet hosted by Afton on Friday, Oct. 14, capturing All-Conference honors with a seventh-place finish.

Jenks posted a time of 17 minutes, 27.10 seconds. The senior competes with the Jackson Hole High School (JHHS) cross-country team.

The course in Star Valley is particularly challenging, said Head JHHS Cross-Country Coach Jeff Brazil.

“The course in Afton is notorious around the state for its difficulty,” he explained. “It is basically on the side of a hill. The first 800 meters is gradual down, the next 1,000 meters is a long uphill climb and the next 600 meters is down. This is followed by 1,000 meters up just when the race gets hard and then the last 1,000 meters is a mix of mostly downhill.”

Jenks “jumped out with the leaders” in the first mile and held onto the seventh spot for the remainder of the race, finishing in a pack with runners from Laramie and Star Valley.

The cross-country season closes out with the State Meet hosted by Wyoming Indian High School in Ethete on Saturday, Oct. 22.

“We look forward to getting a solid week of practice in to get Colby more comfortable leading up to next week at State,” said Coach Brazil. “He is definitely in the mix!”
