BIG PINEY – The communities of Marbleton and Big Piney turned out in force last week to welcome a dozen dogsled racers and the Pedigree Stage Stop Race with a “welcome dinner” Wednesday and a snowy send-off the next morning.

The annual “Meet the Mushers” banquet brought everyone together at the Southwest Pioneers Senior Center in Marbleton, complete with a brass band, local race pennants and loads of hearty fare. The previous day, first-place musher Lina Streeper and her dogs maintained her lead on the race’s Pinedale fifth stage.

Thursday morning, Big Piney fourth-graders and many fans drove 20 miles out of town to the Middle Piney Creek trailhead parking lot. There they were treated to watching dog handlers, race crews and mushers prepare for the sixth stage of race and finally launch themselves onto the 50-mile groomed course.
