PINEDALE – The Pinedale High School girls’ varsity soccer team began the 2014 season at Cody High School Friday for a 3A conference match. It was a tough opening game, as the Fillies took the contest with a final score of 10-1.

The following day, the Lady Wranglers faced Powell High School and were defeated in another conference game. Against the Lady Panthers, the point margin was narrower, with a final score of 3-2.

The Lady Wranglers have a large team this year, but the bench consists mostly of players who have never played on the pitch before. One of those athletes is Big Piney High School Senior Ali Applin, who guarded the net during Friday’s game. Though Applin allowed 10 goals, she also kept 22 shots from making it into the net. As the season progresses and Applin logs more time as keeper, she’s sure to improve.

Even without a bevy of experienced players, Lady Wrangler veterans like senior Valerie Vidal and junior Elisa DeForest proved themselves to be this year’s leaders. Though the final score was clearly in favor of Cody, Pinedale started the game strong and put in the first goal.
