INEDALE – Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) Brucellosis, Feedground and Habitat Biologist Eric Maichak gave a presentation Thursday at the WGFD Pinedale Office to increase understanding, hunter success and balance in the Piney Elk Herd Unit – a herd that has been above population objectives for the past eight years.
The Piney elk herd is mostly contained within Hunt Areas 92 (Piney-Horse Creek) and 94 (South Piney), which contains five feedgrounds – Jewett, Franz, Bench Corral, North Piney and Finnegan.
In 2010, WGFD set the population objective for the Piney elk herd at 2,400, plus or minus 10 percent. Last winter, after conducting aerial and feedground counts, biologists found the herd to be 2,925, about five hundred head more than the objective.
