Enzi opposes Obama’s new carbon rules

Posted: Monday, Jul 1st, 2013

PINEDALE – President Barack Obama delivered a rousing speech last Tuesday at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., on the future of fossil fuels and global warming. In a move that has roiled energy industry stakeholders, the president directed the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to issue new greenhouse gas emissions standards in the next year.

Obama’s directive would see the EPA draft new rules on carbon emissions for power plants by June 2014, with the objective of implementing the new federal rules by June 2015.

The carbon emissions rules would place a heavy burden on coal power, a key source of revenue for Wyoming. U.S. Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) expressed strong dissatisfaction with the president’s directive, calling it “shortsighted and naïve” in a statement released the same day.
