If the shoe fits

Posted: Monday, Jun 24th, 2013

Parents of middle school age children, with school out this summer, do you know where your child is and what he is doing? If not, why not?

Do they have daily chores to keep them occupied? Do they attend summer school? Do they volunteer at various places around the community? Or do they just hang out wherever and whenever they feel like until after dark every night with no curfew? Out of sight, out of mind.

The reason I ask is because I’m getting thoroughly disgusted with the daily trespassing, littering, vandalism and property damage that goes on every summer, all summer long, by your kids on our property – everything from tearing down fences to breaking into buildings.

The last straw came Monday night when they set fire to the property. Whether they were trying to light cigarettes or just being pyromaniacs, this time they crossed the line.

Thank God a young man was alert enough to recognize that the smoke was a potential danger or we could have lost our out building, our business and our home. As it was, the Pinedale Fire Department spent several hours making sure that didn’t happen.

Everyone is so concerned about teaching the three Rs to our young people. How about teaching them right and wrong, having respect for other people’s property and having a conscience when it comes to right and wrong. This is where the adults are flunking out and failing miserably.

Take note and take heed: From this day forward, there will be immeasurable consequences of unknown sources to deal with. As the old saying goes, “Fight fire with fire.”

If your child was responsible, he needs to come forward and shoulder that responsibility by being honest.

Many thanks to the alert young man who reported the fire and to the fire department for their great job. Thanks to all the officers for their work.

Charlotte Faler, Pinedale
