On Aug. 21, 2012, there was a primary election and anyone who desired to be considered as a Republican or Democrat candidate for county commissioner had an opportunity to file.
I was honored to have the voters select me as a candidate and then elect me as a Republican county commissioner in 1994, 1998, 2002 and 2006. When I won my first time in 1994 and Monte Skinner lost, Monte came to me, shook my hand and congratulated me. Monte has always been a friend of mine and I greatly appreciated his kind and graceful gesture. When I ran the last time in the 2010 primary I was not selected as a candidate. While I was disappointed I remembered Monteís conduct, and being of the same mind, I accepted the will of the people and congratulated Andy Nelson.
I believe the primary election is the time to declare oneís availability as a candidate and find out who the people want to represent them. Just because I was not selected in 2010 does not mean that I cannot try another time. But the people speak during an election and in this past primary the people have spoken.
Anyone can decide to mount a write-in campaign after having failed in the primary election. But I cannot ever remember this happening during my 40 years living in Sublette County. If someone ran in the primary and was not selected I believe it is time for them to wait and perhaps try next time. Pride and ego are two of the least worthy attributes to earn the publicís trust. I believe in the old adage that it is not whether you win or lose, it is how you play the game.
I have known Jim Latta for over 30 years as a friend and as a partner owning real estate in Sublette County. Sublette County has been his home for a long time and he and Laurie raised their two sons here and have both been very active in community affairs all over Sublette County. He has also been very active in the Sublette County Republican Party for all those years. He has an excellent business sense, is a good listener and is one of the most personable, caring and reasonable people I know. He will make a fine county commissioner and I am pleased to say that I support Jim Latta in the upcoming election on Nov. 6. I know that he has what it takes and will spend as much time as it takes to get the job done.
So, please join me in voting for Jim Latta for county commissioner for good, open and honest government based on common sense, conservative financial principles and concern for the benefit of ALL of Sublette County.
