PINEDALE – Yellowstone National Park’s (YNP) Firehole Lake Drive has been temporarily closed due to damaged road surface. The popular 3.3-mile loop drive takes visitors past Great Fountain Geyser, White Dome Geyser and Firehole Lake.
YNP spokesperson Dan Hottle said extreme heat from the YNP’s thermal features, in addition to an ambient air temperature of more than 80 degrees Fahrenheit, melted the tar on a portion on the roadway, damaging the blacktop and causing unsafe conditions for
Hottle said Firehole Lake Drive has experienced melted blacktop before, as have several other areas in the park.
“It’s not completely out of the ordinary,” Hottle said. “It is a little more damaged than what we typically see in that area.”
