BIG PINEY – The Big Piney High School track team is looking to Regionals this weekend, returning to Lander Valley High School, where the team took some top spots at an invitational last Saturday.
A few athletes ran new events, just so coaches could see where they would stack up to earn points for the team at Regionals and, later on, at State. The team also got senior Lainy Pape back after a long stint off, and she’ll be crucial in the 4x400-meter relay for the girls.
With relay teams and open events fairly set, coach Bill Lehr is looking to get 15-18 athletes qualified from both the boys’ and girls’ teams this weekend. Athletes can qualify by time or by making it into the top eight of an open event or the top four of a relay.
Thus far, the team has four athletes qualified for open events based on marks reached previously this season. Others have qualified in relays, and still more have come remarkably close to hitting the State threshold. Looking at the competition in the 2A west region, Lehr is confident these athletes will make State either on time or by beating most of their peers and landing in the top spots.
Athletes like Emily Taylor, the Copeland sisters, the Marx brothers, Luke Barron, Garrett Lewis, Garrett Formo and the Shafer siblings are all remarkably close in their events.
