Lester Fluckiger

Lester Fluckiger was born on March 19, 1925, in Turnerville. He died at the home he loved in the Upper Green River Valley on July 11 at the age of 88. Funeral services will be at the Pinedale Community United Church of Christ on July 20 at 2 p.m.

Lester was the second of six children born to John and Mary Ada Fluckiger. He graduated from Star Valley High School in 1943. He served in the U.S. Navy from Oct. 1943 until May 1946. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, he entered Utah State University and graduated with a B.S. degree in Range Management in 1950.

Lester married Donna (Shannon) Fluckiger in Pinedale on Sept. 2, 1950. He worked as a ranch-hand near Big Piney until he was hired permanently by the U.S. Forest Service on the Bridger Forest. They have two children, five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Lester was a past master of Franklin Lodge #31 in Pinedale; past patron of Pinedale Chapter #39, OES, and he served as worthy grand patron of the Grand Chapter of Wyoming in 1991-92; Lander Valley Scottish Rite; Korein Shrine Temple and was a past associate Guardian of Job’s Daughters. He was a long-time member of the Pinedale Community United Church of Christ.

Les spent almost 35 years working for the U.S. Forest Service. He retired in March 1980 as assistant director of range management of the Intermountain Region in Ogden, Utah, and three days later he moved back to wonderful Wyoming for the rest of his life. He rode for the Upper Green River Cattleman’s Association for many summers. Les loved nature.

He is survived by his daughter, Shannon; son and daughter-in-law, David and Rebekah; grandson, Sam and his wife Stephanie; granddaughter; Sarah and her husband Mason; grandson, Johnny Horton and his wife Maegen; Joleen and her husband John; and great grandchildren: Kylie Martinez, Amanda Horton, Eleanor Fluckiger, Issabell Fluckiger, Abigail Fluckiger and Atticus McCraken; his brother Darrol and wife Ranee; sister Lola and husband Darwin Wolfley; sister-in-law Denna; brother Max and wife Joyce; numerous nieces and nephews and many devoted and loyal friends.

He was preceded in death by the love of his life, wife Donna; son-in-law John R. Horton; grandson, Michael Horton; brothers Glen and Jack; and his parents.

Donations may be made in memory of Lester to the Intermountain Shriner’s Hospital for Children, Fairfax Road at Virginia Street, Salt Lake City, UT 84103.
