More than just a decon tent

Posted: Monday, May 6th, 2013

PINEDALE – Thursday, residents of Sublette County may have noticed a large, blue tent being set up outside of the Sublette County Emergency Management (SCEM) office. The structure was a decontamination tent, and it was a way for SCEM, the county’s fire departments and emergency medical services (EMS) to familiarize themselves with the tool in preparation of a contamination event.

But the tent is multi-faceted, SCEM Coordinator Jim Mitchell said.

“It’s all-weather, so it can be an addition to the two command units the county has, used to cover a crime scene or used as a meeting and briefing area,” he said.

The tent’s primary purpose, though, is to decontaminate people in the event of a hazardous material spill, an oil and gas industry accident or, in the worst-case scenario, as a response to a terrorist attack.
